That case resulted in a $13 million verdict against the men earlier this month. I started the Justice Defense Fund in an effort to assist victims in their pursuit of healing and justice. One is public pressure initiatives where we’re trying to shine a light on injustice, specifically on corporate bad actors, like Pornhub, who are involved in the distribution of illegal and criminal content. We’re still waiting for criminal prosecution, not only for the company, but for its individual owners. There’s 26 lawsuits currently, on behalf of victims across the U.S., Canada and the U.K., multiple class-action lawsuits on behalf of tens of thousands of child victims, and so we’re in this process of trying to fight for justice and accountability. What kind of blew this all up was the realization that alongside pretend videos of children being raped were real videos of children being raped, and many times you couldn’t tell the difference, because they’re not verifying age and consent.

The owners and operators of GirlsDoPorn knew the type of women they wanted to appear in their amateur porn videos—college-age millennials—would not agree to casually participate in the porn industry. After all, these women grew up in the Internet age, where amateur porn has been rampantly available for years. On top of that, many instances of their peers’ sexual exploration through sexting had traveled down several slippery slopes, including cases where teens had been criminally charged for sharing x-rated media they took of themselves. In actuality, the co-conspirators were posting the videos on GirlsDoPorn, GirlsDoToys, and PornHub, one of the world’s most heavily-trafficked porn sites. In December of 2020, 40 victims filed a lawsuit against MindGeek for a litany of accusations, including knowingly benefiting from Girls Do Porn videos on Pornhub and failing to moderate the images circulating rampantly on its network of tube sites. In total, the lawsuit demanded more than $40 million in damages—at least $1 million per plaintiff—as well as the money MindGeek earned from hosting and promoting their videos and legal fees.

Young women who applied were later told the work in fact involved making pornographic videos. In October, the federal government charged Pratt and others with criminal sex trafficking. Pratt also faces child-pornography charges after he flew a 16-year-old to Southern California.

When victims asked to stop filming, Garcia and other co-conspirators told the victims that they had to keep going and finish the videos. Hotel room doors were often blocked by camera and recording equipment. Before the video shoots, Garcia offered victims marijuana or alcohol and some drank or smoked with Garcia before filming. In the complaint for damages against Mindgeek it was alleged that victims had sent the company «complaints detailing the fraud and coercion they were subject to by Girls Do Porn» but the company had not ended the partnership. The first court case on behalf of victims was lodged in June 2016. I felt like I never got used to hearing, and every situation was unique as well.
